VB Applies Lessons Learned from Vogelaer 2 to New Geothermal Projects
With the opening of Aardwarmte Vogelaer 2 in the Westland region, VB completed a major geothermal energy project. The company designed and constructed the above-ground installations and underground heat transport pipelines. The experience gained from Vogelaer 2 is being applied to the design and construction of future installations.
The second geothermal doublet has a capacity of 26 MW at a flow rate of 450 m³ per hour. Together with the first doublet, Aardwarmte Vogelaer now has a total production capacity of 44 MW. More than thirty growers, representing over 150 hectares of greenhouse cultivation, are connected to the heating system. In addition, more than four hundred homes receive heat from the system.
A future connection to Warmtesysteem Westland will also link Aardwarmte Vogelaer to the regional district heating network.
Prefabrication
VB has now been involved in seventeen completed geothermal energy projects. Trias Westland, Aardwarmte Maasdijk, Hoogweg and Polanen are also among these projects. According to the company, each project has provided new insights into the construction and subsequent operation of above-ground installations.
Today, more than 70 percent of an installation is assembled and tested in advance. Components are mounted as prefabricated modules on supporting frames. This allows a larger proportion of the work to be carried out under controlled conditions. Once delivered to the project site, the modules primarily need to be positioned and connected.
Future maintenance requirements are also taken into account during the engineering phase. Components must remain easily accessible for servicing and maintenance, while operators must be able to work safely around the installation. To achieve this, VB combines standardisation and 3D engineering with a modular design approach. Close collaboration between designers and construction teams ensures that practical experience gained on site can be incorporated directly into future designs.
